Religion among the Slaves

Next to the family, religion was the most important feature of slave life in the quarters. A deep faith and hope of deliverance sustained the slaves during their long years of bondage. On most plantations, slaves went to church with the white people. Then, after formal services in the white church, slaves usually conducted their own religious ceremonies called praise meetings. Those activities took place in the quarters and were attended only by the slaves.

In the praise meetings, slaves were free to express their innermost feelings through their songs, chants, spirituals, and dances—many of which were African in origin. Slaves were unrestrained at those times. They often acted out their deepest anxieties, frustrations, and anger in tribal dances, accompanied by the rhythmic chanting and clapping of other slaves. But problems arose for the Native Americans, which held them back from their goal, including new diseases, the slave trade, and the ever-growing European population in North America. as European nations scrambled to claim the already occupied land in the “New World,” some leaders formed alliances with Native American nations to fight foreign powers. Some famous alliances were formed during the French and Indian War of 1754–1763. Native Americans were also vulnerable during the colonial era because they had never been exposed to European diseases, like smallpox, so they didn’t have any immunity to the disease, as some Europeans did. The illnesses decimated the Native Americans—by some estimates killing as much as 90 percent of their population. With the population sick and decreasing, it became more and more difficult to mount an opposition to European expansion. Another aspect of the colonial era that made the Native Americans vulnerable was the slave trade. Native Americans allied with the losing side were often indentured or enslaved. Native Americans would only get worse in the 19th century, leading to greater confinement and the extermination of native people. Unfortunately, the colonial era was neither the start nor the end of the long, dark history of the treatment of Native Americans by Europeans.

The majority of colonists were Europeans so in Colonial America Europeans were treated the best as they were much of the population, they also had rule over Africans and Native Americans.

The groups most of the time did not get along because they all had different ideas and because Native Americans Believed their land was stolen from them. Especially as a young adult just starting to explore my political views the freedom of speech is very significant. This guarantees my privacy I have as a citizen. While I do not have anything to hide, this amendment affects my life, because I know I can live in piece of mind, where I am not worried about anyone going through any of my personal belongings. The piece of mind allows me to live a normal life without a fear of having to hide something just because I do not want a person to find it.The Second Amendment allows the freedom to bear arms. Although I am against personally using a gun, it is good to know that if ever necessary, I could protect myself. Thirdly, the Bill of Rights grants that soldiers may not be quartered without consent. This does not apply to today very well, but it’s an important protection that should still be appreciated. The Fourth Amendment protects from unreasonable search and seizure. I have never been, nor ever hope to be, suspected of a crime, so this is not entirely applicable to me but it affects me in that I am protected from random searches.The Ninth Amendment recognizes the other rights that we possess and grants that the Constitution will not restrict these rights. This gives me the freedom to choose where I go to college, what I do on my Saturday nights, and where I get my groceries.The Bill of Rights, which may not entirely apply to my life at this time, gives freedoms that allow me to live a life that is led by me, not an overbearing government.Overall, the Bill of Rights’ significance is so great, that many citizens do not realize how much it protects.
