Answers

Answer 1

The fundamental theme of The Great Gatsby is how Nick Carraway views the story's characters and events. Nick's decision to write the book is an attempt to make sense of a narrative in which he had a little role. Nick's point of view exhibits some conflicts in the opening chapters of Chapter 1.

What is the Chapter 1 of The Great Gatsby about?

Although he defines himself as accepting and nonjudgmental, he also believes that he enjoys moral superiority over most other people because he has a stronger sense of "decency." Even during his initial moment of disdain, Gatsby stands out for Nick as an exception. Nick has a significant negative reaction to his experiences in New York and finally returns to the Midwest in pursuit of a less ethically ambiguous situation.

Nick Carraway, the story's narrator, reflects on his background and the teachings his parents instilled in him as The Great Gatsby begins. As he starts to tell the narrative of Jay Gatsby, readers discover his background, his schooling, and his sense of moral fairness. Nick is retelling the events of the narrative via the lens of memory because the narration takes place more than a year after the actions depicted. In order to become a "well-rounded man" and to relive some of the thrill and adventure he had as a soldier in World War I, Nick relocates from the Midwest to West Egg, Long Island, where the main action of the novel begins. He rents a small home next to a mansion that turns out to belong to Gatsby while attempting to make a living as a bond salesman.

The upscale neighbourhood of East Egg is where Nick's cousin Daisy Buchanan and her husband, Tom, reside. Nick visits Daisy, an ephemeral lady with a socialite's luminosity, and Tom, a gruff, enormous, strong guy who has become haughty due to centuries of luxury. It's at Daisy's that Nick meets Jordan Baker, a professional golfer and Daisy's childhood buddy. The foursome talk about the most important issues of the day as they lay around the Buchanans' estate: the advantages of living in the East, what to do on the longest day of the year, conservative politics, and other such trivial things. Jordan alerts Nick about Tom's mistress's call when Tom answers the phone. Tom, who is notorious for his infidelity, doesn't try to hide his indiscretions. To ask Nick about his alleged engagement to a girl back home, Tom and Daisy take advantage of the situation as they attempt to set Nick and Jordan together. Nick tells them that there is no approaching wedding and that the stories they are hearing are only that—rumors—and cannot possibly be the reality.

There is no concept of "health and safety” in Elizabethan England, so you will inevitably feel vulnerable when you arrive. Nauseating smells and sights will assail your senses; contemporary standards of cleanliness will worry you. People die every day from unknown ailments, the young as often as the old. Infectious diseases periodically kill thousands within a few weeks. Even when plague is not in town, it lurks as an anxiety in the back of people’s minds and, when it does strike, their worry turns to terror. On top of the illnesses, the chances of being attacked and hurt are much higher than in the modern world, and workplace injuries are far more common.

From "The Moon"
By Emily Dickinson

The moon was but a chin of gold
A night or two ago,
And now she turns her perfect face
Upon the world below.
Her forehead is of amplest blond;
Her cheek like beryl stone;
Her eye unto the summer dew
The likest I have known.
Her lips of amber never part;
But what must be the smile
Upon her friend she could bestow
Were such her silver will!
And what a privilege to be
But the remotest star!
For certainly her way might pass
Beside your twinkling door."The Crescent Moon"
By Amy Lowell

Slipping softly through the sky
Little horned, happy moon,
Can you hear me up so high?
Will you come down soon?
On my nursery window-sill
Will you stay your steady flight?
And then float away with me
Through the summer night?
Brushing over tops of trees,
Playing hide and seek with stars,
Peeping up through shiny clouds
At Jupiter or Mars.
I shall fill my lap with roses
Gathered in the milky way,
All to carry home to mother.
Oh! what will she say!
Little rocking, sailing moon,
Do you hear me shout—Ahoy!
Just a little nearer, moon,
To please a little boy.

In a paragraph of 5–7 sentences, compare and contrast how the authors' diction and syntax describe their varied viewpoints on the moon. In your response, be sure to

explain the differences and similarities in diction, tone, and syntax from each poem
discuss the meaning of each text
use your best grammar, punctuation, and spelling

Answers

Answer: The diction is different because in "The Moon" by Emily Dickinson describes the moon as a beautiful women or a goddess, but in "The Crescent Moon" by Amy Lowell, the diction she uses describes the moon as a friend that comes to play every now and then. The tone they write in the poem "The Moon"  is joyful and hopeful, and in "The Crescent Moon" their tone is hopeful yet also full of sorrow. The way they arrange the words in the sentences is correct and precise. The sentence "The moon was but a chin of gold a night or two ago," means that the moon was not full, "And now she turns her perfect face upon the world below." means that the moon is now a full moon. The sentences "Her forehead is of amplest blond; her cheek like beryl stone; her eye unto the summer dew the likest I have known." is a way of describing the beauty of the moon. "Her lips of amber never part; but what must be the smile upon her friend she could bestow were such her silver will!", and when this sentence says "but what must be the smile upon her friend she could bestow were such her silver will!" it's describing the moon as if it were a crescent moon, smiling down with its silver glow lightening up the night sky. And when the poem "The Crescent Moon" by Amy Lowell says "Slipping softly through the sky little horned, happy moon," it means the moon is a crescent moon.

“Cultivation theory” suggests that changing perception can change cultural over times and those changes can lead to long-term behavioral changes. True or false ?

Answers

True, "Cultivation theory" suggests that changing perception can change culture over times and those changes can lead to long-term behavioral changes.

What is "Cultivation theory"?

The long-term impacts of media, particularly television, are examined using the sociological and communications paradigm known as "cultivation theory." It implies that individuals who are routinely exposed to media for extended periods of time are more likely to view social realities as they are depicted in the media they consume, which in turn impacts their attitudes and behaviors.

Professor George Gerbner initially developed the cultivation idea in the 1960s; it was further developed by Gerbner and Larry Gross in 1976. In 1973, Gerbner developed his three-part analytical paradigm for mass communication. The third sort of study is called "cultivation analysis," which is characterized as "longitudinal surveys of people's attitudes on certain themes with levels of media receipt, like television viewing, as the main variable." The Cultivation Theory refers to this analysis.

The cultivation hypothesis was developed as a means of examining the effects of television on viewers, particularly the effects of being exposed to violence on people. Because cultivation theory presumes the existence of objective reality and value-neutral research, it can be categorised as part of positivistic philosophy. The theory's main claim is that "the more time people spend 'living' in the television world, the more likely they are to believe social reality aligns with reality portrayed on television."

Answers

Answer:One word that stuck out to me in Heaney's words was “bravery”. Bravery means to fight in a just manor and to fight with great honor.

Explanation:

Answer:

Explanation:

Seamus Heaney is unusual among translators of Beowulf in that he was himself a poet. This shows in his translation. The language he chooses in rendering Beowulf into modern English is stark, rhythmic, and often surprising. It is not the most accurate of translations, but it is arguably the most beautiful. It also accomplished the remarkable feat of landing a medieval epic, a text over a thousand years old, on the New York Times bestseller list.

That Beowulf survives at all is remarkable: only a single manuscript of this anonymously authored poem exists. The richness of its language and the detail it contains about political, religious, and social customs of the early Middle Ages have made it beloved of scholars. It's also a standard among literature courses throughout the English-speaking world. Unfortunately, this has given it an unfair reputation as somehow inaccessible or arcane. However, although it describes a vanished culture, its language is as vivid as the drama it describes.

In translating Beowulf, Seamus Heaney strikes a balance between creativity and emulation. He often copies the direct speech patterns of the Old English, especially when modern versions of the original words survive. In the poem's introduction, for instance, 'þaet waes g?d cyning!' becomes 'That was one good king' (line 11).

The use of alliteration, or presence of the same consonants, found in Old English is frequently preserved, as when Grendel, the monster, is described as 'blundering back with the butchered corpses' from an assault on King Hrothgar's mead-hall (line 125). In other places, Heaney plays with language in ways distinctive to modern English, as a homage to the similar creativity of the original. In describing the shock of the Danes after Grendel's first raid, for instance, Heaney writes:

'Their wassail was over, they wept to heaven

And mourned under morning' (lines 128-29).

Redlining was the practice of warning mortgage lenders by highlighting on maps regions with substantial Black populations in red ink. This effectively isolated Black people in places that would receive less investment than their white counterparts.

The banking and real estate sectors, as well as the federal and municipal governments, participated in redlining. In many low-income neighborhoods and in Black and other minority groups, redlining established hurdles to the movement of capital, fostering the conditions for long-term racial segregation.

Between 1935 and 1940, the Home Owners' Loan Corporation, a federal organization, used Redlining to legalize racial discrimination all over the United States. For American cities, the organization generated color-coded maps that showed the risks associated with long-term real estate investment or mortgage security.

Redlining also had an impact on whether a community was predominantly Black or White. In 2018, areas with lower HOLC grades had a higher percentage of Black residents.

The statement is an example of cause and effect.

A cause and an effect are the factors that lead to an occurrence or state, respectively. We search for one event that triggered another occurrence in order to identify cause and effect links. The reason an event occurs is its cause. What transpired was the result. There may occasionally be several causes and effects. For instance, when a man insults his neighbour, he offends him (the cause). His neighbour is upset (the result and the subsequent reason), and he then complains to his pals (the next effect and cause). Another result and reason is that his pals get upset and inform their friends about it (another effect and cause).

Thus the correct option is A.
